1. Introduction

English Master ("we", "our", or "us") is a free, AI-powered English language learning application. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, and protect your information when you use the app.

English Master is completely free to use — we do not charge for any feature and we do not collect payment information.

By creating an account or using English Master, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

2. Information We Collect

• Account details: your name, email address, and hashed password (we never store passwords in plain text). Guest accounts store only an internally-generated identifier.
• Learning data: your goals, proficiency level, native language preference, XP, streaks, completed lessons, vocabulary lists, quiz scores, and skill assessments.
• Usage data: counts of feature usage (e.g. number of AI Tutor chats today) that we use to enforce a fair-use cap against abuse.
• Voice recordings: when you use pronunciation practice, listening exercises, or voice input, audio you record is sent to our AI provider for transcription and discarded immediately after the response is produced. We do not store audio files on our servers.
• Images: photos captured for OCR translation are sent to our AI vision provider for text extraction and are not retained by us after processing.
• Chat content: messages you exchange with the AI Tutor are stored so you can revisit them in-app. You can delete them at any time by deleting your account.

We do not collect: precise or approximate location, contacts, calendar, health data, browsing history, advertising identifiers, or payment information.

3. How We Use Your Information

• Provide personalised lessons, adaptive practice, and AI feedback.
• Deliver the AI Tutor, translation, pronunciation coach, and other features.
• Send transactional emails (e.g. password reset codes).
• Detect and prevent abuse of the free AI features.
• Display your first name and last-initial, XP, level, and streak on the leaderboard so learners can motivate each other (you can hide yourself from the leaderboard in Profile → Settings).

4. Third-Party Services

We share only the minimum data required with vetted third parties:

• OpenAI (routed through the Emergent LLM proxy) — powers the AI Tutor, writing evaluation, translation, text-to-speech, speech-to-text, and image OCR. Text prompts, audio, and images you submit are sent for real-time processing.
• Resend — transactional email delivery (e.g. password reset codes). We share only your email address and the message body.
• MongoDB — our managed database provider stores your account and learning data.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. English Master does not use any advertising SDK or analytics SDK.

5. Data Storage & Security

Your data is stored in MongoDB, protected in transit by HTTPS/TLS and at rest by provider-managed encryption. Passwords are hashed with bcrypt. Reset codes are hashed and expire within 15 minutes. Authentication uses signed JWT tokens.

A small operations team may access account metadata (name, email, activity log) for user support, moderation of AI-generated content, and abuse investigations. They do not have access to your plaintext password.

While we implement industry-standard security practices, no system is completely secure. If we ever detect a breach affecting you, we will notify you promptly.

6. Data Retention & Deletion

We retain your account and learning data for as long as your account is active. Voice recordings and OCR images are processed transiently and not retained. Chat messages with the AI Tutor may be stored so you can revisit them.

You can permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time from Profile → Delete my account inside the app. Deletion cascades to your chat history, activity log, and usage counters.

7. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you.
• Correct inaccurate personal data.
• Delete your account and personal data (self-service in-app).
• Export your learning data.
• Object to or restrict certain processing.
• Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.

8. Children's Privacy

English Master is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

9. International Users

By using the app you understand that your information may be processed in countries other than your own, including the United States. We take steps to ensure your data receives an adequate level of protection wherever it is processed.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you within the app or by email before the changes take effect. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the latest revision.
